Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the function of endocrine glands, or hormones – including the thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary gland or ovaries. Disorders of the endocrine glands mean that a particular organ can secrete too much or too little hormones, leading to disorders specific to a particular condition. Endocrinologists treat such conditions as:

• hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism

• Graves’ and Basedow’s disease

• Hashimoto’s disease

• diseases of the pituitary gland – Cushing’s disease

• diseases of the pancreas

• diseases of the sex glands – polycystic ovary syndrome, fertility disorders
